The George Steel Co. began 74 years ago on Broadway Street in Uptown Butte. Steele's founder, George Steele, originally sold only propane gas and Maytag ringer washers. Steele's two sons, Oliver and Clifton, expanded into the furniture business about 30 years ago, when the company moved to it's current location at 800 S. Wyoming St. Over its lengthy history, Steele's has continued to exhibit steady growth, opening a second store at 417 Main St. in Deer Lodge about 17 years ago. "We've been lucky," said Dan Steele, who owns and operates the store with his wife Kim. Dan is the son of Oliver Steele and became the third generation of Steeles to take the helm of the family business. The store carries a full line of appliances including washers, dryers and rangers, and offers installation and delivery. Steele's also stock the latest in DVD, LCD TVs and theater systems.
