Nestled in the heart of Berne, Indiana, a small town set apart from fast paced, trend chasing city centers, you’re more likely to hear the clip clop of horse hooves than the blare of sirens. Here, fields stretch across the horizon, time honored traditions govern daily life, and pride in quality craftsmanship runs deep. It’s within this community, rich in history and values, that Smith Brothers upholstery was born and continues to thrive. Every decision is made with people in mind, whether it’s the quality of lumber used in the furniture or the games played at the company picnic, it’s all about doing what’s right for both the customer and the family of employees. Only the best materials such as hardwood maple, steel coil springs, high quality foam, rich textiles, and top grain leathers are selected to ensure each sofa, chair, or ottoman becomes a long lasting part of a home. The story began in 1926 with Homer Niederhauser and the Dunbar Furniture Company, initially making low price chairs under the Homer Manufacturing Company name. Orv and Les Smith eventually acquired the company and renamed it Smith Brothers Furniture Manufacturing Company, later becoming Smith Brothers of Berne under Carl and Art Muselman in 1960. When the company struggled in the 70s, Fred Lehman stepped in, eventually bringing in his brother Steve, whose leadership and values drove an incredible turnaround. From just 30 employees and 75 weekly pieces in the 1970s, Smith Brothers has grown to over 525 employees producing more than 2,100 pieces weekly in nearly 500,000 square feet of space. Despite this success, humility remains at the core, especially for Steve, whose concern for the well being of his team outweighs any personal gain. This legacy of brotherly love, integrity, and craftsmanship is stitched into every Smith Brothers piece, giving customers confidence in a product built on a foundation of care, tradition, and excellence.
